Jewelry that doesn't tarnish: a complete guide
How many times have you bought a gold piece that turned dark within a month? It's the most frustrating experience in jewelry. And it's avoidable, if you know what to look for.
This guide explains which materials don't tarnish, why some do, and how to tell the difference before you buy.
Why jewelry tarnishes
Tarnishing happens when metal reacts with oxygen, moisture or sweat. The cheapest metals — brass, copper, zinc — react quickly. That's why some earrings leave a green mark on your skin: it's the copper oxidising. Gold or silver plating over these metals delays tarnishing but doesn't prevent it. Over time, the plating wears away and the base metal is exposed.
Materials that don't tarnish
Stainless steel is the most resistant material for everyday jewelry. It doesn't react with water, sweat or air. Gold finish over stainless steel lasts much longer than over other metals because the base is already inert.
Titanium is equally resistant, and lighter. Widely used in piercings because it's completely inert.
Solid gold (18k or higher) doesn't tarnish, but the price is out of reach for most everyday jewelry.
Sterling silver (925) is more resistant than other metals, but it does darken over time from reacting with sulfur in the air and needs periodic cleaning.
How to recognise quality before you buy
Before buying, look for clear material information. "Stainless steel", "titanium" or "925 silver" are verifiable claims. "Metal alloy", "gold metal" or "anti-allergic metal" without further detail usually indicates lower quality.
You can also do a simple test: dampen the piece slightly and wait 24 hours. If any green, brown or black appears, the base metal is not high quality.
Care tips to make them last longer
Store pieces separately to avoid scratches. Clean with a soft cloth when you notice loss of shine. Avoid prolonged contact with chemicals — perfume, sunscreen, chlorine. Pieces with natural stones or shells need more care than pure steel styles.
At NAIA we use stainless steel for exactly this reason: we want our pieces to survive summer, the beach, sweat and real life. No unpleasant surprises a month after buying.
